    Abstract

Water-soluble glass of (50-x)Na2O∙xZnO∙50SiO2 (x=20~35mol%) for the application to inhibition of marine biological pollution was investigated for the change of properties and disinfection effect by dissolution of Zn ion after immersion in seawater. Ion elution was induced for 1 to 14 days for four types of parent glass with the amount of ZnO varied from 20 to 35 mol%. From the ICP analysis, it was confirmed that the amount of eluted ions was dominant in the composition of the water-soluble glass. The Na ion was eluted to 3 order ppm and the Si and Zn ions were eluted to few ppm. In order to measure the bactericidal activity of water-soluble glass, B. thuringiensis strain, which is a gram-positive bacterium, was used. As a result, it was found that the bactericidal ability was increased with increasing ion elution amount and incubation time. Therefore, it was confirmed that Na2O-ZnO-SiO2 glass can be used to suppress marine biological pollution .
